About Chicago Illinois
Chicago is the third most populous city in the United States with a staggering population of 2.7 million people. Nestled at the bottom of Lake Michigan, Chicago has a very diverse economy being a large contributor to finance, education, technology, telecommunications and transportation. Dating back to its inception in 1837, Chicago suffered the Great Chicago Fire which destroyed several hundred square miles of the city and then less than 30 years later rebuilt the city to become the 5th largest city in the United States in the early 1900s. Dozens of steel-framed sky scrapes drape the city and its wide array of attractions.
Falling just short of New York, Chicago has an estimated 60 million tourists a year making it the second most visited city in the United States. Often referred to as the “windy city” Chicago has a little piece of history for everyone. Sprawling throughout downtown, you can visit the Chicago Theatre, Navy Pier, The Pritzker Pavilion, or the Willis Tower. With all that is offered in Chicago the surrounding suburbs also have desirable attractions. Some of those cities include:
What does a welder do?
Contrary to popular beliefs, a welders job extends well beyond just welding two pieces of metal together. There is typically extensive prep work associated with each welding project. Dirt, debris, rust, or mill scale can inhibit a quality weld by causing porosity or inclusions in the fused metal. Proper cutting and grinding is crucial before any weld is made and typically these cuts and grinded edges need high precision depending on the drawing specifications.
What are the four types of welding processes?
Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) also known as MIG is the wire feed welding process while using a shielding gas. The shielding gas (typically stargon, a tri mix gas, for general use) provides a layer of coverage to help eliminate porosity in the weld.
Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) also known as TIG is the most difficult welding process to learn. Typically, you are using three appendages at the same time: one hand is holding your electrode with a sharpened tungsten bit, the other hand is holding your filler rod and slowly feeding as you melt the pieces of metal together, and your dominant foot is controlling a foot pedal to fluctuate the amount of heat going to your metal.
Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) also known as a stick welder, combines a little bit of TIG and MIG. Your electrode IS the filler metal and it is coated with a flux that works similar to a MIG shielding gas. As you weld, the flux covers the weld to trap in the natural gasses emitted during the weld and it helps reduce flaws in the weld.
Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) is another form of MIG welding. You are still using a wire feed welder and a shielding gas, but the filler material is also coated in flux similar to stick welding. Regular GMAW has difficulties outside due to wind blowing the shielding gas away, but with FCAW the flux traps in the gas making it an excellent process for both indoor and outdoor use.
What can you do with a 125A flux core welder?
A 125A 120V MIG welder is an excellent hobby/beginner welder. MIG (Metal Inert Gas) is the easiest welding process to learn (although still takes quite a bit of practice) and can perform without a shielding gas. Its limitations are thickness of metal you can weld on (3/16”) and the duty cycles are typically around 40% or lower. But for little odd jobs around the house it is the perfect welder to learn on!
I have seen a few welding shops in Chicago and I always expect to pay a lot. Fortunately that was not the case with Welding Chicago. I had a custom drop hitch welded for my Duramax and expected to pay way over what a commercial hitch would cost but it was very reasonable. A+ service.
What can I say about the quality of work… except wow. They helped me through the design process and swung for the fences because I am blown away. Their welds look like a machine did it and everything is perfectly dimensioned. If you need a professional welder this is the shop for you.
